Adelman Residence

A Beverly Hills modernist house restored by Benedikt and Lauren Taschen.

The Adelman Residence escaped demolition when Benedikt and Lauren Taschen bought the Beverly Hills house in 2018, beating bidders who intended to replace it. Designed by Thornton Abell and O’Neil Ford in 1956, the 5,000-square-foot home passed to the Taschens from the daughter of its original owners, Lucy and Isadore B. Adelman. Their eight-year restoration covered the guest house, gardens, and pool, along with interior architectural details: cork floors, sliding Shoji screens, and a small wood-paneled elevator. They also refurbished the tennis court, a holdover from the property’s time as part of Charlie Chaplin’s estate. Grace Weaver paintings occupy the entryway and living room, with a triptych above a bedroom headboard. Those contemporary canvases give the restored mid-century rooms another role as a collector’s setting for art.
